Project Description
Fuchs’ Dystrophy
Fuchs' Endothelial Dystrophy is a genetic condition affecting the inner layer of the cornea, known as the endothelium. This layer helps maintain corneal clarity by pumping excess fluid out. In Fuchs' dystrophy, the endothelial cells gradually deteriorate, leading to fluid buildup, corneal swelling, and clouding.
Treatment Options:
- Medication: Hypertonic saline drops can help reduce corneal swelling.
- Endothelial Keratoplasty: Procedures like Descemet’s Membrane Endothelial Keratoplasty (DMEK) or Descemet’s Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSAEK) replace only the damaged inner layer of the cornea, preserving the outer layers and allowing for faster recovery.
- Newer technology: Dr. Abell also offers DWEK or DSO (Descemet’s stripping only) surgery, and can discuss with you new technology and treatments on the horizon such as cultivated human endothelial cells.
