A Visual Guide to Cataracts

Understand what cataracts are, the symptoms they cause, and how modern surgery can restore your clear vision.

What is a Cataract?

A cataract isn’t a film that grows over your eye; it’s the natural lens inside your eye becoming cloudy over time. It’s a normal part of aging. The diagram below shows how a cataract scatters light, turning a sharp scene into a blurry, faded view.

SHARP & VIBRANT

A healthy lens focuses light clearly.

BLURRY & FADED

A cloudy lens blurs and yellows your vision.

Common Symptoms to Watch For

Because cataracts develop slowly, you might not notice the changes at first. Look out for these common signs.

The 15-Minute Surgical Solution

Cataract surgery is a safe, quick, and highly effective day procedure that permanently replaces your cloudy lens.

1. Preparation

Your eye is completely numbed with drops. You’ll be relaxed and comfortable, feeling no pain.

⬇

2. Removing the Cataract

The surgeon makes a tiny incision to gently break up and remove the cloudy lens.

⬇

3. Inserting the New Lens

A clear, artificial Intraocular Lens (IOL) is folded and inserted, unfolding into place.

⬇

4. Completion

The tiny incision is self-sealing (no stitches needed) and a protective shield is placed over your eye.

Choosing Your New Lens

You have a choice for your new, permanent lens. Discuss with your doctor which option best fits your vision goals and lifestyle.

Monofocal

Provides clear vision at a single fixed distance (usually far). This is the standard, reliable choice.

Best for:

  • Excellent distance vision.
  • Patients happy to wear reading glasses.

Toric

Corrects both your cataract and your astigmatism in one step for sharper vision.

Best for:

  • Patients with astigmatism.
  • Clearer distance vision than monofocal.

Multifocal / EDOF

Advanced lenses designed to provide clear vision at multiple distances (near, mid, and far).

Best for:

  • Reducing dependence on glasses.
  • Active lifestyles.

When is it Time for Surgery?

The right time is not about how “ripe” the cataract is. It’s about your quality of life.

If blurry vision is stopping you from driving comfortably, reading, or enjoying your hobbies, it’s time to have a conversation with Dr Abell or your ophthalmologist.
